Making the world we want to inhabit
Are you expecting someone else to make the world you want instead of helping to make it?
You have a powerful vision for how things could be better. You notice what is missing, care when things fall short, and can imagine possibilities that don't exist yet.
The Energy
We can become very good at recognising what is missing. We see what could be kinder, more beautiful, more useful, more just, more alive, and wait for the world, or someone else, to provide it.
Maker reminds us that the world does not have to already contain what we long for. Our longing may be asking us to help make it.
Making is one of the ways possibility enters the shared world. An idea becomes a practice. A value becomes a way of living. A longing becomes something that other people can encounter, experience and respond to.
We don't only inherit the world. We participate in making it.
The Invitation
Maker asks us to commit our energy to creating the version of the world we want to live in.
It is easy to stand outside what exists and see what is missing. We can become frustrated, judgemental or bitter that other people aren't changing things in the ways we believe they should.
But our dissatisfaction may also contain important information. The things we wish were different can reveal something about the world we deeply want to inhabit.
Making asks us to do something with that knowledge.
It is an act of deep participation and commitment. We invest something of ourselves in the things we make and send into the world, with the intention that our offering will participate in transforming the world we share.
To make is to stop waiting for the world to become what we long for and commit some of our own life-force to helping it become.
A Way Through
Notice something you repeatedly complain about, judge or wish somebody would change.
What is your frustration telling you about the world you actually want?
You don't have to solve the whole problem. Find the part that is yours to participate in. What can you make, practise, offer or begin that brings some of what you long for into existence?
Turn some of the energy of your frustration towards making what you wish were here.
