The Forge
Preparing for power
Are you trying to replace care with force?
You have tremendous drive. You know how to push through resistance, work hard and bring real force to something when it matters. When action is needed, you are willing to act.
The Energy
There are times when force is necessary. Sometimes the hammer really does need to fall.
But a forge teaches us that powerful action depends upon everything that happens around that moment of impact. The quality of the steel, the heat of the fire, the condition of the tools, the skill of the hand, and the capacity of the body all affect what happens when force is applied.
The Forge reminds us that care is not the opposite of power. Care is part of what makes powerful action possible.
When we are urgent to create, change or overcome something, we can reach for greater effort, pressure or force before attending to what will have to withstand it. What we create may look strong while becoming brittle beneath the surface.
The Invitation
The Forge asks us to attend to the quieter work that makes powerful movement possible.
Prepare the material. Tend the tools. Build capacity. Gather good resources. Strengthen and care for the body that will do the work. Pay attention to timing, temperature, pressure and rest.
Preparation is not what we do while waiting to become powerful. It is part of how power becomes sustainable.
This does not mean endlessly preparing because we are afraid to act. The Forge is not asking us to avoid heat, pressure or force. It asks us to make sure that when the powerful movement comes, we and what we are creating are able to carry it.
A Way Through
Notice where urgency is making you push harder.
Before adding more force, ask what needs care.
Perhaps something needs strengthening, better resources, more practice, more support, a different tool, or time to recover. Perhaps your own body is telling you that it cannot keep carrying the pressure you are placing upon it.
Do the care-work that makes the powerful movement possible.
And when the conditions are ready, let the hammer fall.
