Discernment

Change the relationship. Change the experience.

Where are you giving away your power to choose by waiting for something outside of you to change first?

You have a powerful ability to recognise where things aren't working well, where the energy flowing through them might be snarled or tangled, or where something needs an upgrade.

The Energy

When something hurts, frustrates or frightens us, it is easy to locate the whole problem outside ourselves. We decide what another person, situation or system is, and wait for it to become different before we can feel differently.

Judgement locks the problem in the other. Discernment returns us to our own agency.

The Invitation

Discernment does not ask us to pretend that everything is acceptable, or to take responsibility for what belongs to someone else. It asks a different question: how do I choose to relate to what is happening?

We can change our relationship to what is happening, and thereby change what we are experiencing. Sometimes that means speaking, leaving, asking for support, changing a boundary, moving closer, moving away, or building the conditions in which we can feel safer.

A Way Through

Instead of asking only what needs to change outside you, ask: How can I choose to relate differently here?

Look for the part of the relationship that is genuinely yours to change.
